Roots and Branches

Roots and Branches is a collaborative art exhibition that I curated and co-produced in collaboration with Play for Progress at the Museum of Croydon. It was created through participatory workshops in visual art, photography, music, and painting. In the previous year, the Play for Progress community of young people and associate creatives have explored themes of roots, displacement, branches, growth, nourishment, survival and the importance of connections to others and to the self. This exhibition gives a glimpse into what they shared and discovered within and about themselves, through being and creating together.

Featured Work:
Our Branches– Dima Karout & Young People – Visual Art
Tree of Life– ATMA & Young People – Painted Mural
Anonymous Portraits– Emma Brown & Young People – Photography
Sounds of Play– Joe Cryar & Young People
Soundscape RAW Music– PFP Tutors & Young People – Music

Our Branches, the artwork I produced for the exhibition is an assemblage of prints on wooden panels, suspended with jute cords, showing prints created by the young people through our Tuesdays art workshops. I assembled the final piece to represent our collectivity and visual conversations with reflections on personal journeys through displacement, towards finding a new land where people can replant our roots, flourish and expand their branches.

Roots and Branches was presented at the Museum of Croydon from January to April 2020 before moving online as a digital exhibition. More details: MuseumOfCroydon.com/RootsBranches
